Daniela Arcuri grew up in the heart of Buenos Aires, where she absorbed the English, French, Spanish and mostly Italian influences that define the cosmopolitan “porteño” culture of this port city. At age thirteen, Daniela began training in ballet, modern dance, music, acting, jazz, argentinian folk dancing, and gymnastics and began teaching, choreographing, and performing tango for modern dance at the age of fifteen. She is a graduate of the prestigious Escuela National de Danzas and Instituto Nacional de Gimnasia in Buenos Aires and former competitive athlete on the Argentinian National Rhythmic Gymnastics team.

Daniela began her professional tango career in her early twenties in a production with legendary tango dancers Juan Carlos Copes, Maria Nieves, and Pepito Avellaneda in Toronto, Canada. She then began to teach and choreograph tango in Eduardo Arquimbau’s Tango Academy in Buenos Aires. Her style developed as a result of her training in ballet/contemporary dance, and the influence and instruction from some of the great milongueros of Club Almagro and Villa Urquiza of Buenos Aires, such as Gerardo Portalea, Petaca, and Juan Bruno. In the late 80′s she continued training with the best tango masters of that time such as Rodolfo Dinzel, Eduardo Arquimbau, Antonio Todaro, and Pepito Avellaneda and spent many years dancing and observing in the milongas of Buenos Aires.

She won world-wide acclaim with her then-partner Armando Orzuza, together acknowledged as one of the top professional tango couples, regularly appearing on the Solo Tango TV channel in Buenos Aires, owning their own tango school in Buenos Aires, and teaching/performing in more than 200 cities in Europe and the U.S., including prestigious festivals in Boston, New York, and Miami. They performed with such important artists as Julio Iglesias, Madonna, Libertad Lamarque, Maria Grana, Alba Solis, Beba Vidart, Juan Carlos Copes and Maria Nieves, Pepito Avellaneda, Fernando Soler, Sexteto Mayor Orchestra, Sexteto Tango Orchestra, La Orquesta de Ernesto Franco, and The Hollywood Bowl Symphonic Orchestra, among others.

Daniela has since choreographed and performed in many tango productions including Tango Pasion, and Sebastian Tango, her latest choreography and performing project, which was presented at the Complejo Cultural Borges in Buenos Aires in April, May, and June of 2008. She is now teaching in the U.S.A. and residing in Austin, TX.

Grisha Nisnevich: Guitarist, Artist, Argentine Tango Dancer,  began his music studies in St. Petersburg, Russia at the age of four. He studied with Vladimir Denisov, Yevgeniya Riabokon and Ilya Permiakov. He continued his education with Joseph Urshalmi at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music in Israel, where he later became a faculty member.

In 2001, Gregory became the first guitarist to receive a prestigious Artist Diploma from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, Colorado, where he studied with Maestro Ricardo Iznaola.

Gregory is a winner of the 1998 International Classical Guitar Competition in Portland, Oregon, a first place winner of the 1995 International Israeli Radio Competition and a first place winner of the 1992 Contemporary Music Competition in Israel. He is a winner of special grants from American-Israel Cultural Foundation, Chamber Music America, and a three-time winner of the grant from Colorado Council of the Arts.

Gregory's repertoire as a soloist includes not only music by Israeli and Russian composers, but also an extended "standard" repertoire of a performing guitarist that includes Baroque, classical, Spanish and 20th century music. This Russian-born musician interprets Russian, Spanish, South American and other world classical and folk melodies with an impeccable sense of style and affection, showing the lyrical beauty and color of the music.

Gregory's unique artistic abilities and highly successful concerts and recitals earned him the honor of the first performance of works by famous contemporary composers Jan Freidlin, Emanuel Val, Daniel Akiva and others.

In 2001, Gregory encountered passionate music of Argentine Tango and it has become a part of his repertoire not only as a musician, but as a dancer as well. It has opened for him a new, endless path of creative exploration. As a dancer, Gregory performs in tango shows and teaches group and private dance classes.

Currently, Gregory maintains an active touring schedule, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He performs regularly with the Jerusalem Chamber Orchestra, Golden Strings Quartet in Israel and Europe, and the Mercury Ensemble and Extasis Tango Orchestra in the United States.

Luiza Paes & Guillermo De Fazio

Teaching & Performing

Wednesday,  July 14th

“Ganchos & Sacadas”

Class: 7:30 pm to 8:30pm | Performance: 10:30 pm| Class Fee: $20

Luiza Paes, Brazilian-born, music student since age six, worked education and vocal technique for many years. Her very first tango experience was in 1997 in Portland, Oregon where she took a group class with Clay Nelson and was immediately struck by the music and fascinated by the idea of the connection in the couple. Back in Brazil, Luiza met Norberto "Pulpo" Esbrez who became her teacher and then partner for nearly 10 years. Luiza and "Pulpo" traveled the world teaching and performing: Russia, Japan, Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Greece, Spain, Denmark, United States, Canada, Mexico, Uruguay, and Brazil. They taught at numerous tango festivals including CITA in Buenos Aires, Portland, Las Vegas, Boston, Amsterdam, Tango del Norte in Denmark.

She is very successful in generating a relaxed and humorous environment for the students to enjoy and take the most out of their learning process. Since February 2008 she started teaching and traveling on her own and with different partners (Tango Masquerade, Tango de los Muertos, Portland TangoFest 2008). Her focus has been teaching musicality along with a technique that opens up possibilities for creativity in the dance.

Though only twenty-seven, Guillermo De Fazio, along with his brother Enrique, have already become a legendary dance couple: “Los Hermanos Macana.” They are famous worldwide for their breathtaking and witty tango interpretations. With their full-length two-man shows they thrill their audiences at Tango, Dance and Theatre festivals from America to Europe and Australia.

They couldn’t have chosen a more striking stage name: The term “macana” comes from the Lunfardo, the language of the harbor quarters of Buenos Aires and means “a witty guy” and also “one who’s just got it.” And that’s exactly what they are: playful and comical but with an incredible technical brilliance, a unique couple bursting with ideas and energy, not just because they are two men dancing tango together.

Yet “Los Macanas” are everything else but a “modern couple.” Deliberately they call themselves traditional tango dancers. Thus they take up an important part of tango history, when at the beginning of the last century men danced with each other, a consequence of the lack of ladies in the immigration country Argentina.

In his classes, Guillermo teaches with a lot of fun and empathy and of course technical perfection. Guillermo is pure joy for his students.

ABOUT Susana Miller: Is regarded as one of the most prominent teacher of “Milonguero: style tango, a strictly social style danced o the crowded floors of the clubs in the center of Buenos Aires, emphasizing musicality and connection. Susana encourages her students to use more rhythm in their dance and to shape their own designed patterns to these small spaces.

Through her teaching and encouragement, Sauna is probably responsible for bringing more people to dance at the milongas of Buenos Aires than any other single teacher.
